Smart Energy Tips

Grab that free, low-hanging fruit

First, the freebies. These strategies may sound simplistic, but they work well:

Keep heating vents clear

Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently.

Turn down the water heater

Lowering the temperature of water in the water heater to 115-120 degrees reduces power use often without a noticeable difference to the user, says Prindle.

Use fans wisely

In just one hour, a hard-working bathroom or kitchen fan can expel a houseful of warm air, according to the Department of Energy. Turn them off as soon as they’ve done their job.

Keep the fireplace damper closed

Heat rises, and an open damper is like a hole in the roof. Also, limit use of the fireplace, since fires actually suck heat from a room, says Harvey Sachs, director of ACEEE’s buildings program. Close off seldom-used rooms. And shut the vents inside.

Low-cost fixes

So you’ve put the easiest, and free, ideas to work. Now you can really make a dent in that heating bill with one cheap trip to a hardware store (Home Depot, for example, has all of the items below) and a few hours of work.

Use curtains

Opening curtains and shades on south-facing windows during the day allows solar radiation to warm a living space; closing all curtains at night helps retard the escape of that heat. Web sites on the topic abound, but one of the best is run by the Department of Energy.

Block that leak!

The small gaps surrounding windows, doors and other areas in the American house, taken together, are like a 9-square-foot hole in the wall, according to EarthWorks Group’s “30 Simple Energy Things You Can Do to Save the Earth.” – Tips Courtesy of http://realestate.msn.com/

Turn down the thermostat

“The rule of thumb is that you can save about 3% on your heating bill for every degree that you set back your thermostat” full time, says Bill Prindle, deputy director for the nonprofit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Turn down the thermostat 10 degrees when you go to work, and again when you go to bed – a total of 16 hours a day – and you can save about 14% on your heating bill, says Prindle.

OTHER TIPS

  • Whenever possible, hang your laundry outdoors to dry
  • Install patio covers, awnings, and solar window screens to shade your home from the sun
  • Keep the coils of your central or window air conditioner free of dust and dirt
  • Use compact fluorescent lights. They last up to 10 – 13 times longer than standard bulbs and use 75% less energy
  • Lower the temperature of your water heater from 1400 to 1200
  • Don’t leave the fridge door open!
  • Choose a high-efficiency clothes washer and dryer
  • Defrost food before cooking – you could save 30% to 50% on cooking costs
  • And pre-heat your oven only for baking
  • Install water-conserving fixtures, such as showerheads, faucets and toilets - Increases water Efficiency
  • Fix leaky faucets. One drop per second can add up to 165 gallons per month – more than a person uses in two weeks
  • Install a programmable thermostat. When properly used, it could save as much as $100 or more off your annual heating bill

Been using Yankee oil for over 15 years. Long term employees, stable and consistent service. Always a fair market price, but what separates from most is service - they take care of their customers. Responsive, considerate, professional, trustworthy... and go above and beyond. The bad review just placed by my tenant, was yankee simply honoring my request that any service calls are vetted and placed through me. Tania, owen, David, and the team at Yankee are industry veterans, and im not alone in stating Yankee is a safe and best choice.

We have used Yankee Oil for 4 years now Everyone that we deal with from the office to the delivery driver's and the tech's have always been super nice knowledgeable and respectful to us. Their prices are definitely reasonable and the qaulity is always there. I highly recommend them.

Yankee just installed a new boiler and hot water tank, and we could not be happier. Their prices were reasonable and the quality of the installation is top notch. Only ball valves, and lots of them to isolate any potential trouble area. Individual high efficiency circulator pumps for each zone, instead of zone valves that don't regulate flow well. Wiring and plumbing is neat and well organized, the system was made as compact as possible to free up space. They take care of any energize CT refunds available. Their techs are well trained, and have the best equipment for tuning and checking efficiency. They take care of the permits, and the replacement went fast, and they left everything very clean.Above and beyond, these guys earned every star!
